NSBE at UVa Executive Team

Alicia Land
President
My name is Alicia Land (she/her) and I am a third-year Computer Science major here at UVA. Before I came to UVA, I never had a place where I could come together with other Black engineers and lift each other up. But, ever since I started here at UVA, NSBE has become an organization that has brought me opportunities, growth, and an amazing community. And this year I am thrilled to continue as the President with the goal of making NSBE the best it can be for our membership.

Samir Muhammad
Vice President
My name is Samir Muhammad, and I use he/him pronouns. I am a third-year Biomedical Engineering major here at the University. I’ve always been super involved with NSBE since being here because of the welcoming community and opportunities given. It is so important to surround yourself with driven, like-minded individuals, and I see NSBE as an outlet for that. As Vice President, I plan on upholding the President’s missions and our chapter’s inner functionality the best way I can.

Salem Keleta
Secretary
My name is Salem Keleta (she/her pronouns) and I am a third-year Systems Engineering major. I was first introduced to NSBE at UVA and it has been an organization that has supported me immensely throughout my years here. NSBE has impacted me in many ways ranging from helping me find a community and friends that are going through similar experiences of being minorities in STEM majors to providing me with various opportunities to succeed as an engineering student. As Secretary, I will work alongside the executive board to effectively communicate events to NSBE members. I aim to continue to make NSBE an impactful organization through meetings that will benefit members as well as keep them engaged.

Bethany Bazemore
Programs Chair
My name is Bethany Bazemore (she/her), and I am a second-year Systems Engineering student here at UVA. I have been involved with NSBE since first-year, as I served on the First-Year Executive Council for the organization. In my role as Programs Chair for the 2021-2022 academic year, I strive to create an environment where members can facilitate both professional and social growth here at the University.

Jessica Brown
Treasurer
My name is Jessica Brown, and I use she/her pronouns. I am a Second Year at the university, and my major is Civil Engineering. This is also my second year involved in NSBE at UVA. As the previous President of NSBE’s First Year Council, I gained leadership experience, and as a team, the First Year Council hosted two successful events. This year as Treasurer, I hope to organize and manage the chapter’s finances well so that we can hold activities and attend NSBE conferences.

Janco Megerssa
Publications Chair
My name is Janco Megerssa (He/Him/His), and I am a second year Computer Science student at UVA. NSBE has prepared me for the life of a student engaging in extracurriculars. During my first year I was treasurer of the first year council at UVA. It was a very enriching experience that allowed me to develop my leadership skills as a college student. During my position this year, I hope to uphold the values of the communication zone and make sure everyone is well aware of NSBE and its importance.

Robel Woldegyorgis
Pre-College Initiative Chair
My name is Robel Woldegyorgis (he/him), and I am a second-year Computer Engineering student at UVA. NSBE has been impactful in my experience at UVA as it allowed me to connect with the black engineering student community through the NSBE First-year Council. It also allowed me to be knowledgeable about and explore the different resources UVA has to offer for black engineering students. This year as a Pre-College Initiative Chair, I hope to create opportunities for black engineers to give back to their communities by sharing their experiences and helping to inspire young black students who want to go to STEM fields.

Chris Barfield Jr.
Telecommunications Chair
My name is Chris Barfield (he/him), and I am a second-year Computer Science student at UVA. NSBE has been impactful in my experience at UVA by connecting me with my first summer internship and also giving me helpful resume/ interview prep. As Telecommunications Chair, I hope to maintain and improve the NSBE at UVA website and also help improve the chapters social media presence.
